PostSubject: Class: Monster Summon   Class: Monster Summon I_icon_minitimeTue Jul 03, 2012 2:47 am

Good evening students, lets have our today's lecture:

A Summon (召喚 Shoukan) is performed when a Monster Card is played face-up on the Monster Card Zone. There are some exceptions to this qualifier. For example, returning a banished monster back to the field by the effect of "Dimensionhole", or flipping a face-down monster face-up because of an attack or effect. These are not considered to be Summons. Likewise, Sets and Tribute Sets are not considered to be Summons, so cards such as "Torrential Tribute" cannot be used when a monster is Set. It is possible to special summon a monster face-down, through means such as the effect of "Morphing Jar #2", but it is still considered to be a Summon, and not a Set.

A - In the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game (and Online Card Game as well), there are a number of different types of summons.

1.0 - Normal Summon: A Normal Summon can be conducted once per turn. Setting a monster will also take up your Normal Summon for the turn. You can only Normal Summon a monster in face-up Attack Position. You cannot Normal Summon a monster in face-up Defense Position, unless forced to by a card effect (i.e. "Light of Intervention").

Class: Monster Summon 300px-LightofInterventionDT02-EN-DNPR-DT

Some cards can change the Normal Summoning rules. For example, "Ultimate Offering" allows you to pay 500 Life Points for each extra Normal Summon you wish to perform in a turn (and it lets you Normal Summon during your opponent's Battle Phase). "Double Summon" allows you to Normal Summon twice in one turn and "Chain Summoning" allows you to do so three times.

If a Normal Summon is negated (such as by "Solemn Judgment" or "Solemn Warning"), it is still considered that the Normal Summon is conducted on that turn.

Class: Monster Summon 300px-SolemnJudgment-BP01-EN-R-1E Class: Monster Summon 300px-SolemnWarning-CT08-EN-SR-LE

1.1 - Tribute Summon: Any monster of Level 5 or higher requires a Tribute Summon (called Advance Summon in the OCG, previously called Sacrifice Summon). Monsters that are Level 5 or 6 require one monster to be Tributed (called Release in OCG, previously Sacrifice), while monsters of Level 7 and higher require 2 tributes. Some high-level monsters like Moisture Creature require 3 monsters to be Tributed in order to activate an effect.

Class: Monster Summon 300px-MoistureCreatureDB2-EN-C-UE

Cards like "Mausoleum of the Emperor" can bend the rules of Tribute Summoning by allowing you to pay Life Points instead of Tributing monsters. However, this means the Summon is then considered a Normal Summon and not a Tribute Summon.

Class: Monster Summon 300px-MausoleumoftheEmperorSDLS-EN-C-1E

Even if the monster is Tribute Set instead of Tribute Summoned, the correct number of Tributes must be offered. So you cannot Set a monster in order to avoid offering a Tribute.

A Tribute Summon is treated exactly as Normal Summon, except a few cards refer specifically to whether or not the card was Tribute Summoned (such as Monarchs). Normally only one Normal Summon (including Tribute Summons) can be conducted in the same turn (exceptions: see "Ultimate Offering", "Double Summon" and "Chain Summoning", etc.). This means you cannot Normal Summon or Set a low Level monster and then Tribute it immediately to Tribute Summon a high Level monster.

Tributing a monster for a Tribute Summon is a cost. Therefore, if the Tribute Summon of the new monster is negated, the Tributed monster(s) won't return to the field, but its effect will activate (if it has one that cannot miss the timing) like "Black Ptera" from the appropriate place. FLIP effects will not activate since the monster was not flipped.

2.0 - Flip Summon: A Flip Summon (Reverse Summon in the OCG) occurs when you manually flip a face-down Defense Position monster into face-up Attack Position. A player must Flip Summon to flip his/her own monsters face-up without a card effect. Flip Summons are not considered Normal Summons or Special Summons. A player can Flip Summon as many times as he/she wishes to, as long as he/she has the ability to do so. However, you cannot manually change the battle position or Flip Summon a monster on the turn that it was summoned or set. When a Flip Effect Monster is Flip Summoned its Flip Effect will activate. Flip Effects will also activate if the monster is flipped face-up in the Damage Step or if flipped face-up by an effect that does not negate Flip Effects, such as the effect of "Swords of Revealing Light". However, Flip Summon Trigger Effects must be triggered by a proper Flip Summon, not by the card being flipped in any other way.

Class: Monster Summon 300px-SwordsofRevealingLight-BP01-EN-R-1E

Monsters that are destroyed by the effects of "Mystic Swordsman LV2", "Paladin of White Dragon", etc, are not flipped face-up and their Flip Effects do not activate.

Class: Monster Summon 300px-MysticSwordsmanLV2DR3-EN-R-UE Class: Monster Summon 300px-PaladinofWhiteDragon-DPKB-EN-R-1E

With cards such as "Stealth Bird" or "Guardian Sphinx", you can Flip Summon it and use its own effect to flip it face-down again in the same turn. This is possible because flipping a monster face-down is not a manual position change.

Class: Monster Summon 300px-StealthBird-BP01-EN-C-1E Class: Monster Summon 300px-GuardianSphinx-BP01-EN-C-1E

A monster flipped face-up by a card effect such as "Book of Taiyou" or "Stop Defense" or as a result of battle is not considered a Flip Summon. Only flipping a Set monster manually is considered a Flip Summon. However, because the monster was flipped face-up, any Flip Effects will activate.

Class: Monster Summon 300px-BookOfTaiyouRP02-EN-C-UE Class: Monster Summon 300px-StopDefenseDB1-EN-C-UE

3.0 - Special Summon: Special Summons (特殊召喚 Tokushu Shōkan) are monsters summons that occur due to a card effect (as opposed to Normal Summons and Sets, which can be performed without the use of any specific card effect). Special Summons do not use up your 1 Normal Summon or Set for the turn, and they can be conducted as many times as possible in a turn (that is, as many times as you can activate effects that Special Summon monsters). Also note that Special Summoning requires no Tributes unless indicated by the card effect. A Special Summoned monster is placed in face up Attack Position or face-up Defense Position, unless the card effect indicates otherwise. The card effect will specify from where the monster can be Special Summoned (from the hand, deck, Graveyard, or banished zone). If no location is specified, then the monster is usually Special Summoned from the hand.

Special Summons can be conducted in 2 ways:

A - Built-In Special Summons (also known as Inherent Special Summon): These happen when the monster has an effect that Special Summons itself without starting a chain (for example, Cyber Dragon and Ghost Ship). In this way, Built-In Special Summons behave similarly to Normal Summons or Flip Summons. Synchro Summons and Xyz Summons are considered Built-In Special Summons because they do not start a chain. Following the Problem-Solving Card Text, Effect monsters with Built-In Special Summons always specify in parenthesis the location from which they can be Special Summoned. Cards that do not specify the location from where they are Special Summoned are always Special Summoned from the hand.

Class: Monster Summon 300px-CyberDragon-BP01-EN-C-1E Class: Monster Summon GhostShipGENF-EN-R-1E

Built-In Special Summons are important because they can be negated by any card that negates Summons, including Solemn Warning, Solemn Judgment, and Black Horn of Heaven. Cards such as Divine Wrath cannot negate Built-In Special Summons because these are conditions, not card effects, and they do not activate.

Class: Monster Summon 300px-BlackHornofHeavenDT01-EN-DNPR-DT Class: Monster Summon 300px-DivineWrath-BP01-EN-R-1E

B - Effects that Special Summon: All Spell, Trap, and monster effects activates and resolves. Therefore, any Special Summon that results from a card effect (for example, Monster Reborn and Gorz the Emissary of Darkness) will occur at the resolution of that effect. Fusion Summons and Ritual Summons occur during the resolution of a Spell Card. Additionally, some monsters have effects that Special Summon themselves but are not considered Built-In Special Summons (for example, Ancient Sacred Wyvern); such an effect will start a Chain, and the Special Summon will occur when the effect resolves. Recall that cards can only be chained to the activation of effects and not to the resolution.

Class: Monster Summon 300px-MonsterReborn-DPYG-EN-R-1E Class: Monster Summon 300px-GorztheEmissaryofDarkness-GLD5-EN-GGR-LE Class: Monster Summon 300px-AncientSacredWyvernANPR-EN-UR-1E

Effects that Special Summon are important because they can only be negated by effects that can negate the Spell, Trap, or monster effect that causes the Special Summon. Cards such as Black Horn of Heaven and Thunder King Rai-Oh cannot negate Special Summons due to card effects because these Special Summons occur during resolution. Solemn Judgment can negate a Spell or Trap that Special Summons, and it can negate Built-In Special Summons, but it cannot negate monster effects that Special Summon. Solemn Warning can negate any effect that Special Summons, as well as Built-In Special Summons.

Class: Monster Summon 300px-ThunderKingRaiOh-TU08-EN-UtR-UE

Note that effects that activate after a monster has been Special Summoned, for example, Torrential Tribute and Bottomless Trap Hole, can be activate after any Special Summon, regardless of whether it is Built-In or due to an effect. The exception is if a monster Special Summoned by an resolving effect that is Chain Link 2 or higher. This is because effects can never be activated in the middle of a resolving chain, and whatever effect that resolves last (as Chain Link 1) would cause Torrential Tribute, etc. to miss the timing.

Class: Monster Summon 300px-TorrentialTribute-BP01-EN-R-1E Class: Monster Summon 300px-BottomlessTrapHoleSDDL-EN-C-1E

Some monsters have conditions to whether or not they can be Special Summon and from where, like "Sauropod Brachion", who cannot be Special Summon from the Deck.

Class: Monster Summon 300px-SauropodBrachionANPR-EN-R-1E

For any monster that 'must first by Special Summon by fulfilling its normal Summoning conditions and that conditions are negated, or Synchro, Fusion, Ritual or Xyz monsters that are not Special Summon through the normal methods, those monsters are not considered to be "Summoned Correctly", thus preventing them from being Special Summoned from the Graveyard. A common situation where this ruling occurs is when "Starlight Road" is activated and the player Special Summons a "Stardust Dragon". If "Stardust Dragon" is sent to the Graveyard, even with its own effect, it will not be able to be Special Summoned from there.

Class: Monster Summon 300px-StarlightRoad-GLD5-EN-GUR-LE Class: Monster Summon 300px-StardustDragonTU06-EN-R-UE

3.1 - Fusion Summon: A Fusion Summon (融合召喚 Yuugou Shoukan) is the act of Special Summoning a Fusion Monster from your Extra Deck using "Polymerization" or any other card effects which explicitly states that the Summon is a Fusion Summon.

Class: Monster Summon 300px-Polymerization-DPKB-EN-C-1E

3.2 - Ritual Summon: A Ritual Summon (Gishiki Shoukan 儀式召喚) is the act of Special Summoning a Ritual Monster that is conducted through the effect of a Ritual Spell Card. These Summons usually require Tributes greater than or equal to the Level of the monster being Summoned from your side of the field or your hand. These Tributes are treated as a Card Effect rather than a Cost.

3.3 - Synchro Summon: A Synchro Summon (シンクロ召喚 Shinkuro Shoukan) is the act of Special Summoning a Synchro Monster from the Extra Deck using a Tuner monster with additional non-Tuner monsters.

3.4 - Xyz Summon (Exceed Summon): An Xyz Summon (pronounced ik-seez[1], エクシーズ召喚, Ekushīzu Shōkan - Exceed was adopted by fans) is the Special Summon of an Xyz Monster from the Extra Deck. It is a game mechanism introduced in Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL.

Xyz Summons can be conducted when there are two or more monsters of the same Level on your side of the field. Those monsters can be used as Xyz Materials to Summon an Xyz Monster whose Rank is the same as the Levels of the monsters used.

In order to Xyz Summon an Xyz Monster, you must first take the required Xyz Materials face-up on your side of the field and stack them together (called overlaying in the anime). Then, the Xyz Monster is Xyz Summoned from your Extra Deck, and placed on top of the stack.

Important: Fusion, Ritual, Synchro and Xyz Summons are also considered to be Special Summons. A Tribute Summon is also considered to be a Normal Summon.

B - There are also other methods of summoning monsters, but they are not official methods, and their names come from anime, manga and video games, or from vernacular used by players, but these unofficial terms do not have separate summoning rules.

1 - Gemini Summon: Normal Summons a face-up Gemini monster to have it get its effect.
2 - Accel Synchro Summon: Synchro Summons a Synchro Monster using a Tuner Synchro Monster and non-Tuner Synchro Monster.
3 - Delta Accel Synchro Summon: Synchro Summons a Synchro Monster using a Tuner Synchro Monster and 2 or more non-Tuner Synchro Monsters.
4 - Limit Over Accel Synchro Summon: Synchro Summons a Synchro Monster using a Tuner Synchro Monster and 2 or more non-Tuner Synchro Monsters.
5 - Double Tuning: Synchro Summons a Synchro Monster using 2 Tuner monsters.
6 - Contact Fusion: Special Summons a Fusion Monster using its Fusion Material Monsters, without using Fusion Summoning cards like "Polymerization".
7 - Transformation Summon: Special Summons a Transformation Monster using its specific card.
8 - Dark Synchro Summon: Synchro Summons a Dark Synchro Monster by subtracting the Level of a Dark Tuner monster from the Level of 1 non-Tuner monster (so far, this only present in video games and anime).
9 - Chaos Xyz Evolution: Special Summons a "Chaos Numbers" Xyz Monster by overlaying on top of an Xyz Monster, and the Xyz Materials used by their former Xyz Monster now attach to their new Xyz Monster.

Important: Flip and Special Summons may be conducted as many times as you would like per turn, unlike Normal Summons, which can only performed once per turn.

Well i hope you all found this lecture usefull, any additional info about "Types of Special Summons" will be posted on the next classes, Good Night to all!
